Gothic Nightlife in the 1980s

This publication examines alternative music culture in the 1980s, highlighting
the sense of belonging and community it fostered. Gothic clubs developed
into safe places where people could express their uniqueness through
fashion, music and live outside of society's expectations. This resulted
in the creation of a print-based publication that honours the event and
celebrates its visual identity, utilising traditional methods like screen printing.

Investigating clubs like Le Phonographique revealed their significance in Leeds during the 1980s, a time of turmoil in society and industrial decline. In this situation, nightlife venues developed into secure settings for self-expression, community, and escape.

The project extends beyond the A5 publication to a screen-printed t-shirt
and a tote bag designed to carry the publication. This approach reinforces
accessibility and reflects the DIY ethos of 1980s subculture, allowing
the work to exist as both a publication and a wearable, everyday object.
